Dear Roker Report,
This might seem trivial, but wearing red-and-white stripes, the Sunderland colours, whenever possible for away matches is highly desirable and, in my opinion, advantageous. It appeared to be an additional
positive factor in humbling Chelsea.
Our opponents respect – and in some cases fear – the sight of a marauding Sunderland in their traditional colours. Indeed, our own players take pride in our clear identity. I understand the commercial side of things and colour clashes, but let’s hope we wear our gear more often, if possible, when travelling, beginning at Fulham, who of course play in white shirts.
I may be of a different generation, aged 83, but let me remind you: Sunderland’s colours are the world-famous red-and-white stripes. I don’t sit at home watching matches (attending matches is now not a possibility for me) wearing other than red, white, and black clothing and feeling proud of the lads, win, lose, or draw.
Ha’way the lads!
Arthur Gray
Ed’s Note [Gav]: Whilst of course, I’d love us to always wear red and white, it’s not our choice and the league’s rules dictate it. The rules change often but the premise is largely the same year to year – here’s a canny explanation of how it’s all worked out. Gone are the days where the club’s decided between themselves, with the referee’s input – I doubt there will be a situation like in the past where an away team wore the change kit of the side they were facing because they’d forgotten to bring an alternative along for the ride!

Dear Roker Report,
What is the ceiling for this team?!
Seriously… where the hell are we going? I have no idea whether we’re in a relegation battle or a title race! What the bloody hell is going on?! Chris Wynn said it best on the podcast after the game at the weekend… this football club of ours is a rollercoaster!
Ian Hughes
Ed’s Note [Gav]: The fact that the ceiling is unknown is really exciting, I think. I don’t think anyone has a clue where we are headed, only that it is up… both short term and long term, the future is very exciting. The team we’ve assembled is getting better and better and it feels like a number of clubs have decided to have a poor start to life in the Premier League, which only helps us to dream big. I don’t see any way that this team struggles this season, and I think if you spoke to the players they’d be talking about finishing as high as possible, with asperations to take Sunderland into Europe. That might seem like pure fantasy, but with players like Granit Xhaka running the show, would you honestly rule it out? Even if we don’t end up anywhere near those positions, the ambition will always be to finish as high as possible and win every single game, which is a mentality this club has rarely had when we’ve found ourselves in the Premier League.
What is our ceiling? Well, I don’t think we’re about to win the Premier League, but I fancy us to give just about anyone a game, and that coupled with the hard work and belief we’ve got in the side makes me think that we can have more days like we had at Chelsea.
