According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is not necessarily out of the running for Borussia Dortmund center-back and Germany international Nico Schlotterbeck even if
Dayot Upamecano signs a contract extension.
How would that be possible?
Well, Bayern Munich is not sure what the future holds for Kim Min-jae and Schlotterbeck could still even be available on a free transfer in 2027, which would ease any financial concerns over a transfer fee. In a nutshell, there are multiple ways this deal could happen:
Even with Dayot Upamecano set to extend his contract, a potential move for Nico Schlotterbeck is not automatically off the table. Firstly, because Bayern are still internally discussing the future of Kim Min-jae. Secondly, it is said that Bayern are also considering Schlotterbeck on a free transfer in 2027 should he decide to go into the final year of his Dortmund contract.
In case of a sale in the coming summer, BVB will not accept less than €50m, and would also prefer to sell Schlotterbeck abroad. Real Madrid are interested. Despite a recent meeting with Dortmund bosses, Schlotterbeck is still playing for time and refusing to commit to a new deal.
BFW Commentary
It feels like a longshot that Schlotterbeck would play through a “lame duck” season at BVB in 2026/27, but it is not impossible. While the last team Borussia Dortmund would like to send Schlotterbeck to is Bayern Munich, the defender could force the issue this summer if he is willing to take the chance to wait it out and eventually move on a free transfer in 2027 if an agreement cannot be reached.
That scenario is not out of the question, but a sale of Kim would likely help expedite Bayern Munich’s ability to make a competitive offer for Schlotterbeck in 2026.
