You had to figure that there would be a little bit of slippage in Marquette volleyball’s standing in the eyes of the AVCA top 25 voters after losing in straight sets to #14 Creighton and then not having
the best of time beating DePaul in straight sets on Sunday. That was the case when the new poll came out on Monday afternoon, and the Golden Eagles slipped from 18 points last week to 15 points this week. That’s a one point drop off from the week before when Marquette had 16 points, too.
15 points leaves the Golden Eagles as the unofficial #31 team in the country. They’re in between Georgia Tech with 18 points and noted MU 2025 opponent Western Kentucky with 12 points. Also down there in Receiving Votes territory? Florida, as the Gators dropped out of the top 25 this week, falling to the unofficial #26 spot with 66 points. Ryan Theis’ team is 2-3 since losing to Marquette, and a five set road loss at LSU on Sunday knocked them out of the rankings. They’re now 7-6 overall.
Wisconsin, a team that beat both Marquette and Florida this season, is staying steady at #7 in the country this week to be the best ranked team on MU’s schedule. Creighton used their win over Marquette to move up one spot this week to #13, while Minnesota fell four spots to #14 to round out the MU schedule discussion.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday when they open up a two game weekend road set out east. First up is Seton Hall at 4pm on Friday, and then 24 hours later, Marquette sets up shop at St. John’s. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
