A separate injury has derailed Spencer Horwitz’s return from the injured list.
The Pirates first baseman returned to Pittsburgh this week to be evaluated by the training staff after being hit in the head with a pitch.
Horwitz was hit while playing for the Bradenton Marauders on a rehab assignment on July 25.
The Pirates announced that Horwitz is dealing with a concussion.
Horwitz has been out a month with a left hamstring injury and was placed on the 10-day IL on June 25.
In 74 games, Horwitz is slashing
.280/.386/.455 with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, and 33 RBIs in 295 plate appearances.
His on-base percentage is the highest of his career and was one of the top in the National League for a large stretch of June.
Horowitz has also walked and struck out an even 40 times.
The Pirates offense is first in baseball in hits per game (9.1) and tied for second in runs per game (5.2).
Horwitz has been a big reason why the Pirates offense took off, and the team has done a solid job in his absence.
The Bucs got Endy Rodriguez back against Arizona, and Oneil Cruz may return in two weeks.
Pittsburgh lost two of three to Arizona at PNC Park and is currently two games out in the wild card.
