It’s safe to get your classic Odell Beckham Jr. jerseys out of the closet. The New York Giants have announced that the veteran receiver is once again wearing number 13.
Beckham said on Monday that there would be “conversations” with WR Jalin Hyatt, who has worn number 13 since 2023.
“I think we all know what that means to me, and there definitely will be some conversations,” Beckham said. “I’ll just say we’ll see what happens, but like I said, it would be an honor and a privilege to put that back on.”
It seems those conversations were fruitful.
Beckham wore number 3 throughout camp and preseason, the number he wore as a collegiate receiver at LSU. However, it’s just fitting that he would want the number in which he rewrote the record books for the Giants.
Beckham wasn’t the only receiver to get a new number, with rookie Malachi Fields swapping in his “0” jersey for “88”. Fields never wore 88 in college, playing as number 86 and 8 at Virginia and 0 at Notre Dame. However, it’s also fitting that Fields swapped to 88, considering he has been compared to Hakeem Nicks since being drafted.
The number has largely laid fallow since Nicks’ 2011 season, with the exception of Evan Engram’s stint from 2017 to 2021. Nick’s run until his injury in 2012 still leaves big shoes for the rookie to fill, but his preseason was certainly promising.
