The United States Women’s National Team will have an extra shot of espresso back in the fold. Today, U.S. Soccer named the 26-player roster who will head to Brazil for two friendlies against the 2027 Women’s World Cup hosts, and Mallory Swanson was among the returnees to the roster.
The return of Swanson to join with Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson, who were dubbed “Triple Espresso” during the gold medal run at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, marks the first time they will be on the roster since
that gold medal match 2 years ago.
The 26-player roster:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Claudia Dickey (Seattle Reign FC), Mandy McGlynn (Utah Royals), Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United)
DEFENDERS (8): Tierna Davidson (Gotham FC), Emily Fox (Arsenal FC), Avery Patterson (Houston Dash), Lilly Reale (Gotham FC), Tara Rudd (Washington Spirit), Emily Sonnett (Gotham FC), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC), Kennedy Wesley (San Diego Wave)
MIDFIELDERS (8): Croix Bethune (Kansas City Current), Lindsey Heaps (OL Lyonnes), Claire Hutton (Bay FC), Riley Jackson (North Carolina Courage), Rose Lavelle (Gotham FC), Olivia Moultrie (Portland Thorns), Jaedyn Shaw (Gotham FC), Lily Yohannes (OL Lyonnes)
FORWARDS (7): Michelle Cooper (Kansas City Current), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit), Emma Sears (Racing Louisville), Ally Sentnor (Kansas City Current), Mallory Swanson (Chicago Stars), Alyssa Thompson (Chelsea FC), Sophia Wilson (Portland Thorns)
The roster also sees players like Tara Rudd, Croix Bethune, and Riley Jackson make their return. But, the focus is on the dynamic Triple Espresso, who combined for 10 goals and 5 assists during the 2024 Summer Olympics. It has been over 600 days since Swanson last appeared with the national team, and her return was welcomed by head coach Emma Hayes.
“It’s fantastic for our team, both on and off the field, to have Trinity and our two soccer moms back on the same roster,” Hayes said in a statement. “However, we recognize the importance of preparing for World Cup qualifying and the need for the group to come together in that process. We need to build connections between players, and with limited time before qualifying, every minute counts. This trip offers amazing opportunities for these players to experience Brazil, its culture, stadiums, and passionate fans, and especially playing the World Cup hosts. Few challenges in women’s international soccer compare to facing Brazil in Brazil, so we’re excited for the valuable lessons this experience will bring.”
With some players out due to injury, like Naomi Girma, Catarina Macario, and Sam Coffey, while others return to the roster, it will be key for them to continue to build their chemistry against a Brazil team that is one of the best in the world. They also get the experience of traveling to two stadiums that will play host to the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The USWNT will seek to qualify for the tournament this fall when they compete in the Concacaf W Championship in Texas.
The USWNT will face Brazil on June 6th at Neo Química Arena in São Paulo and again on June 9th at Arena Castelão in Fortaleza.
