The Green Bay Packers signed center Sean Rhyan to a three-year, $33 million contract earlier this week. Packers Twitter/YouTube’s very own Ken Ingalls was able to get the contract details of the Rhyan deal, which is laid out below.
First of all, there’s no void years here, so the Packers aren’t stretching these cap hits over five years (at least yet). Secondly, it looks like there’s an out in Year 2, as the Packers will only have his
remaining prorated signing bonus to pay off ($7.33 million) if they want to move off his $12.67 million cap hit in 2027.
Functionally, this is a one-year, $14 million contract with team options for $9 million in 2027 and $10 million in 2028, but he’ll only carry a cap hit of $6.7 million in 2026.
In short, the team backloaded the deal (on the cap) with non-guaranteed money but paid him a good chunk of it (42 percent) up front. It’s a pretty flexible deal.
If he doesn’t pan out, the team can move off him as early as 2027, before his $6.65 million roster bonus is due. If he does work out, the team will have him on a deal that will average $9.5 million in cash for his final two seasons of the deal.
It will be interesting to compare his true guarantees with the rest of the center market, once full details are released for this crop of players.
