In our recent roundtable, the consensus was that injuries are the main reason for Roma’s struggles over the last two months. Injuries have decimated Roma, especially in the attacking department, where Paulo Dybala and Matías Soulé‘s absences have left Gian Piero Gasperini with a dearth of creative options behind striker Donyell Malen—who has had to shoulder the entirety of Roma’s attack, with Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk also out for the entirety of matches in 2026.
Wesley, one of the standout players
in Roma’s rollercoaster season, has been sidelined due to injury. Wesley was replaced by Roger Ibañez in Brazil’s friendly match against France late last week, and the news isn’t good. After tests revealed a tear in his right thigh, it has been confirmed that Roma’s star winger will miss a month of action, leaving Gasperini in even more of a lurch.
The hope is that Wesley will be able to return for Roma’s match against Fiorentina on May 3rd. That would mean Wesley missing four games—against Inter, Pisa, Atalanta, and Bologna. Since Roma is clinging to a slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League, Wesley’s absence will be a significant loss in those matches. With Wesley sidelined and Angeliño yet to play meaningful minutes this season, it will likely fall to Devyne Rensch or Kostas Tsimikas to step in for the Brazilian.
In addition to Wesley, Roma will also be without Manu Koné in the midfield against the league leaders on Easter. And with only Soulé possibly returning from the injured list against Inter, Gasperini will have his work cut out for him as Roma is in desperate need of points.
