The Knights had a rough week, dropping their first five games against Omaha (60-82) before avoiding the sweep with a dominant win on Sunday. The Knights allowed 39 runs while only scoring 18 this series.
Starting pitcher Shane Murphy, 24, was a diamond in the rough for Charlotte, as he pitched five shutout innings on Friday. Murphy was very reliable on the mound, keeping sharp contact to a minimum and only allowing two hits. Of course, the wheels completely fell off for the Knights after Murphy’s outing was over, and they lost by a score of 10-1. Most of Murphy’s innings have come at the Double-A level, and he has been terrific for the Barons, posting a 1.38 ERA and a 3.11 FIP in 110 2/3 innings.

The Barons wrapped up an outstanding second half with an unusual 2-4 week against Biloxi (74-64). Despite the disappointing series, the Barons finished the regular season with an 81-57 record to lead the Southern League. The Barons will open the postseason on Tuesday, in the opener of a best-of three series against the Lookouts (73-61).
Outfielder DJ Gladney, 24, was all over Biloxi’s pitching staff. Gladney has a solid amount of experience in all outfield positions, but he is primarily a center fielder. This week, Gladney went 7-for-23 with two homers, a triple, a double, a walk, and a stolen base. Gladney drove in nine runs, which more than doubled the second-highest total among the Barons. This excellent performance resulted in a sky-high 1.029 OPS to lead the team. Gladney is only slashing .235/.277/.368 this season, but in 50 September at-bats, he has exploded for .300/.314/.680.
