“The largest college stadium project ever” has wormed its way into the ears of thousands of fans attending Northwestern sporting events since November of 2024. During the waning fall quarter for undergraduate students, the Big Ten school unveiled renderings of its brand-new stadium, complete with a “premium experience” for every fan.
And from the moment the first piece of concrete fell off the historic Ryan Field just nine months earlier, news outlets, content creators and regular Joes on X could
not get enough of capturing every qualm, astonishment, weary or hopeful thought that came to mind. It has not stopped since. And now, less than two months away, anticipation is only growing.
“We’re not trying to be the biggest,” Head Coach David Braun told Fox 32 Chicago in July. “It’s the intimacy, the sideline for our fans, the opportunity we have to create for our players.”
Sitting at a capacity of 35,000, Ryan Field is one of the Pluto’s in the solar system of Power 4 program stadiums. As some have noted on platforms like TikTok, there are “larger high school stadiums,” and it feels more like a “soccer stadium” than a football one. While the former is inaccurate as the largest high school football stadium holds 26,500, the latter is architecturally true.
But with NU’s undergraduate population sitting at the smallest in the Big Ten, it seems fair that the stadium was built to seat so “few” — if you could even call it that. Even the second “smallest” Big Ten school’s undergraduate population, the University of Nebraska, tops the purple and white by an estimated 10,000 with a stadium that seats a little over 50,000 more.
So genuinely, why would you build seats for an alumni base you don’t have?
Braun told Fox 32 Chicago that he believes the stadium is the right size for Northwestern’s community, and I could not agree more. We already know Northwestern doesn’t need 90,000 attendees to create an atmosphere; we’ve seen it happen with 7,000 fans during the men’s basketball 2023 upset of No. 1 Purdue and the performance that nearly rivaled it against No. 1 Michigan in 2026.
But if Northwestern is prioritizing a smaller and more intimate stadium, then every seat, and how they are used, matters. This is where the hesitance about the architecture starts.
The bleachers at Martin Stadium would sway under the weight of students standing on their steel frames, and when the time came to take a break, those students would sit. It became a wave-like ritual every timeout, halftime or general stoppage. This worked for the students, especially for a school that, critically, has minimal school spirit for football.
But now there is a dilemma: the new Wildcat Wall forces students to stand for the entire game, a design that mimics European soccer stadiums, for the 2,000 undergraduates it can accommodate.
Even the most successful FBS programs don’t have a standing student section — so why exactly was this the move? According to Pat Ryan Jr., the CEO of Ryan Sports Development, it was done to “create the most powerful student section in college football.” Not to be cynical, but I don’t see that happening.
The movement and hype in the stands were responsive to the game; they were not mandated by any type of framework. There is a massive difference between encouraging students to get on their feet and be loud, and designing a section that gives them no other option. When has forcing a young adult to do something ever worked out in a positive and affirming way? Now, instead of allowing less-invested fans to show up and contribute to the atmosphere in numbers, the design may deter them from attending altogether.
The Wildcat Wall feels like Northwestern designed the student section it dreams of rather than the one it actually has. The standing works in Europe because constant participation and verticality are deeply ingrained into the culture of those clubs. Rome was not built in a day, and Northwestern cannot manufacture that culture it is trying to replicate simply by removing seats. It was a mistake to think it could.
However, I don’t think this is any reason to be fraught; I’m sure when it’s time to host the Nittany Lions, the anticipation will surely create an otherworldly experience for everyone in attendance. In fact, I do have very high hopes for this stadium, and am especially excited to see it completed after these past two years. There are questionable choices, sure, but what’s done is done.
Now all that’s left to do is wait and see.
