With a quick start from the home side and two second-half goals in rapid succession, WVU fell 3–1 to No. 14 Penn State this afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The Mountaineers now sit at 1–2 on the season.
Penn State grabbed the opener in the 12th minute, then doubled and tripled the lead with strikes in the 49th and 51st minutes. WVU broke through in the 65th when Taylor White buried her second goal of the year off a feed from Maddie Levy. White led the attack with five shots, including two on target.
WVU
generated plenty of pressure, finishing with a 14–6 edge in shots and a 6–1 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn’t claw back from the early deficit. Goalkeepers Mackenzie Smith and Bailey Herfurth split time in net again, with Smith making the team’s lone save.
The Mountaineers return home on Thursday, August 28, to face Duquesne in a Gold Rush matchup at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET with the game broadcast on ESPN+.
