The Pittsburgh Steelers surprised fans everywhere on Sunday when they released linebacker Elandon Roberts just weeks after bringing him back after a one-year stint with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Roberts put together two quality performances in the preseason against the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, seeming ready to make an impact in Week 1. However, Roberts became a casualty of the Steelers keeping four quarterbacks on their roster. And while many assumed it was just a temporary release before bringing
him back into the fold, Roberts himself says that’s not the case.
Per Dejan Kovacevic of DK Pittsburgh Sports, there is no arrangement between Roberts and the Steelers to bring him back.
“As of late last night, there’d been no arrangement between the Steelers and the player to push him through the practice squad or anything like that,” Kovacevic writes.
When asked if there was any sort of arrangement to bring him back, Roberts himself told Kovacevic, ‘Nope. Nothing.’“
Roberts added he didn’t see his release coming at all.
“I have no clue,” Roberts said on his release, via Kovacevic. “I wish the team nothing but the best this season, but I was definitely shocked.”
The Steelers linebacking corps got thinner as a result of the surprise release, and they will now lean more heavily on Cole Holcomb and Carson Bruener as rotational pieces.
