Newcastle United are exploring a move for Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, with Football Insider’s Mick Brown reporting that the club is monitoring his contract situation ahead of a potential January
transfer.
Brown wrote that Newcastle are “working on further strengthening defence with Oscar Mingueza” and that “sources told Football Insider that Newcastle are monitoring the ongoing situation of Oscar Mingueza”.
The insider added that the 26-year-old “is set to leave the Spanish side at the end of the season on a free, suggesting he could leave for a cut-price in January”.
Mingueza is out of contract in the summer, which puts Celta under pressure to sell during the upcoming window rather than lose him for nothing. That has drawn attention from several Premier League clubs beyond Newcastle, with Aston Villa and West Ham United also tracking the situation.
Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider that Mingueza’s profile explains the interest.
“I think he’s a player that a lot of clubs would be looking at, especially with his situation being out of contract next summer,” O’Rourke said. “So, they could land a talented player on a free transfer or even potentially try and sign him for a cut-price deal in January if Celta Vigo do decide that could be their last chance to cash in.”
He highlighted the defender’s range of positions as a major draw.
“On Mingueza, the key thing for Mingueza is his versatility. He’s capable of playing at centre-back, full-back and also in midfield as well. So that’s what makes him such an attractive proposition.”
