Joel Sherman reported this afternoon that, according to sources, the Mets are hiring Johnny Washington to be a co-hitting coach. Presumably, by hiring Washington, the Mets are replacing Jeff Albert’s previous role as director of hitting.
Washington played minor-league and independent-league ball for several years before moving into coaching. He coached some minor league teams for the Dodgers before being hired by the Padres while Andy Green was their manager. He was the Padres’ first base coach in 2017-2018,
and their hitting coach in 2019. He moved to the KBO as a hitting coach for the Hanwha Eagles in 2021, and in 2022, he was the Cubs’ assistant hitting coach. The Angels hired him as their hitting coach in 2023 and dismissed him when Kurt Suzuki took over the team this year. In the 2026 season, he took over as the hitting coordinator for the Braves’ farm system.
Washington will work alongside Troy Snitker, the other co-hitting coach, and assistant hitting coach Rafael Fernandez.
