The summer was dotted with rumors that Max Eberl was under pressure to keep his job as board member for sport at Bayern Munich, beyond the expiration of his existing contract. Even after his extension to 2029, reports continued that critics remain.
But Bayern president Herbert Hainer pushed to lay rumors of unrest to rest and gave a sharp rebuke to the media for the way they have covered the situation.
“I would strongly disagree with the claim that there was a long period of back and forth [regarding
Eberl’s contract],” Hainer said this week for Sport1 in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “That was something you in the press kept portraying. We always said that we would make a decision in August. And in August, we made that decision.
“The fact that you had your own opinions beforehand about whether we would extend with whom and for how long — that’s your business, not ours. We acted very clearly at the Supervisory Board level, made the decision in August, and extended both contracts [Eberl along with CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen] by two years.”
Hainer even addressed Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß’ eyebrow-raising comments from last spring, prior to the DFB-Pokal Final, in which he gave Eberl only “60-40” odds of earning his new contract. Why did Hoeneß say such a thing?
“Because you kept asking him about it constantly,” Hainer declared in response. “But the Supervisory Board, as I’ve said a few times already, carries out its responsibilities in a constructive and consistent manner. And that’s exactly how we made the decision.”
