The thing that was really good for them is a potential concern, and that is the receiver position and running back. Saquon (Barkley) did not have a great year. The offensive line health and age is a concern. They will still be formidable.” Will A.J. Brown’s departure be addition by subtraction? One voter said the pressure’s on quarterback Jalen Hurts, whose relationship with Brown had grown cold and who will be playing in an overhauled offensive system under new coordinator Sean Mannion. “It was hard for me to ding Philly even if the offense is unknown, even if they are taking a step back without A.J. Brown,” another exec said. “Vic Fangio and that defense is going to be top five. That O-line is going to be pretty good. It is still Saquon Barkley. Could they win 16-13 every week? Probably.”
Eagles Film Review: Analyzing Makai Lemon’s debut and other 53-man roster inclusions – BGN
Makai Lemon’s first appearance was hardly spectacular. He caught three of his five targets for three yards, was targeted on Tanner McKee’s interception, and muffed a punt late in the game. However, I am not going to panic about a first-round receiver after one preseason appearance. I did not dislike this first route as much when I watched the All-22. On the TV copy, the release looked slow, but it looks better from a wide angle. Lemon has never been an outstanding separator against press coverage, and probably never will be, but his work at the line of scrimmage is good here. He beats the initial contact, gets on top of the cornerback, and puts himself in a position to win vertically. The problem comes at the top of the route. Lemon looks inside without selling the possibility that he is actually breaking in that direction, allowing the cornerback to read the route and make a play on the football. Obviously, it’s only one rep, but Lemon must become better at manipulating defensive backs once he has established leverage. Simply looking in one direction will not move NFL cornerbacks consistently. Still, arguably the difficult part of this rep is defeating press coverage and stacking the defender. Lemon does that well. It wasn’t an ideal debut, but it wasn’t a disastrous one.

The answer to the question posed here is no, Makai Lemon did not earn a starting role. He missed most of camp with a hamstring injury, and when he did practice he didn’t stand out. Also, his lone preseason game was a dud, as he had 3 catches for 3 yards on 5 targets, including a drop that led to an INT, and a muffed punt. That said, he might start anyway. Smith will be the WR1, and Dontayvion Wicks will be the WR2. When Lemon was ready to practice after a long period of being out, he was inserted right back into the starting lineup. Many of the other wide receivers had better camps than Lemon, but not to the degree that they should be no-brainer starters. So, we’ll see. My guess is that the Eagles will shoehorn him into the starting lineup Week 1, as the WR3.

“With Makai, we had to come up with creative ways to get him walkthroughs and to get him different things that he could do while he was out,” Eagles receivers coach Aaron Moorehead said on Tuesday. “He couldn’t physically run but we could walk through things or we could talk through things and we could have him break the huddle and go where he needed to go just to catch him up that way. It wasn’t the most fun thing in the world. I know he wanted to be out there and I know we all wanted him to be out there but that’s what you do. You sacrifice your time and you sacrifice your energy to get where you want to go. For the short term, it’s, ‘Hey, let’s get to Washington.’ But long-term, it’s like, ‘Where are we going to be at the end of the year?’ He took it really well and I thought that it was a collaborative effort.” Moorehead gave credit to Howie Roseman, Nick Sirianni, Parks Frazier, the entire coaching staff and players for helping to make sure Lemon would be able to be quickly reintegrated when he returned from the injury.

I wonder if the decision to keep Elijah Moore and Jonathan Jones was influenced by last year being a disappointment. Maybe that team needed less focus on potential and more on results. This roster certainly feels more results oriented. Howie said Moore had a great camp. You want to reward that with a roster spot. Keeping Bernard over him might have sent the wrong message to the team. The Eagles went with the player who earned it. They kept EJ Jenkins because he had a good summer. I was crazy enough to rewatch part of the Cincy game. Jenkins blocking stood out to me. That requires effort and physicality. Jenkins got rewarded for being a good blue collar player. Good for him and Moore. This team should be hungry after the disappointing end to 2025 and the offseason changes. AJ Brown is gone. Jeff Stoutland is gone. Adoree Jackson is gone (just seeing if you’re paying attention). They aren’t running last year back. This is a different team. I think the roster moves reflect a different mentality. The projects went to the practice squad so they’re still part of the organization and the future. They just didn’t get roster spots like we expected. I’m glad the team was able to bring back Bernard and Weru. I still believe in them.

This gets us to the part of the GQ article that will probably arouse the most interest, when Baron queries Hurts about the distance that opened up between the quarterback and his best receiver, A.J. Brown, culminating in the trade of Brown to New England this offseason. Hurts finally concedes that they “clearly” grew apart. He doesn’t explain how or why that distance grew, but I think we can take a pretty good stab at figuring it out. After the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX, Brown made an extraordinary admission: Winning wasn’t as satisfying as he’d thought it would be. He said – paraphrasing here – that he’d come to realize that winning would only satisfy him if he also was personally dominant. I think that maybe Brown was, as some have said, frustrated with Hurts’ limitations as a passer, but more than that, I think he wanted out of here because he knew that in a Hurts-Saquon Barkley offense, regardless of scheme, he was never going to be the focal point. With Hurts as the QB and Barkley running behind an elite offensive line, the Eagles are not going to throw the ball 40 times a game. No wideout is going to dominate. You didn’t hear anything about Brown being unhappy the year before Barkley arrived, when Brown caught 106 passes for 1,456 yards.

Now, the question is whether or not Milton will want to return to Dallas. After over a year of development with Brian Schottenheimer, Klayton Adams, and Steve Shimko, as well as being Dak Prescott’s primary backup all of last year, Milton was apparently demoted to QB3 in favor of free-agent pickup Sam Howell. Given the state of QB play in the NFL, especially among second-stringers, Milton feels like one of the 64-best options in the league. But now that he’s cleared waivers, one must wonder what the whispers are among coaches and other decision-makers about him.

Two big names on the injured list are edge rushers Odafe Oweh (calf) and K’Lavon Chaisson (knee), who are still working to the side, and their Week 1 availability [against the Eagles] could be in question. Quinn told reporters Monday that Oweh won’t practice this week.

The 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year cleared the injury hurdle this offseason, but his ability to stay healthy and reclaim the phenomenal form of his first year will likely tell the story of the 2026 Commanders. After rocky performances from the Commanders in joint practices and during the preseason, the odds are getting steeper. Still, Daniels led the resurrection of the Washington franchise as a rookie, quarterbacking the team to its first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991. Then came 2025, a season marred by injuries for Daniels and a free fall back to earth for the Commanders, who went 5-12 — the exact opposite of their record in the feel-good 2024 campaign. After ailments limited Daniels to just seven games and only two wins as a starter, the player who seemed like an instant D.C. savior must put his cape back on. As a passer and runner, Daniels had 4,459 yards of offense and 31 offensive TDs in 2024. Will that Daniels be back?

Darian Kinnard, 26, was waived by the Green Bay Packers in roster cutdowns. Kinnard was a fifth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft. Kinnard has played in 20 NFL games. Seventeen of those, including four starts, came last season with the Packers. The 6-5, 322-pound Kinnard is primarily a right tackle. [BLG Note: Last summer, the Eagles traded Kinnard for a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Packers. The Eagles then traded that pick … in addition to a 2026 fifth-round pick … back to Green Bay for Dontayvion Wicks.
