Christian Barmore will not have to appear in front of Attleborough District Court next week. According to court documents, his arraignment on charges of strangulation and domestic assault has been postponed until March 9.
Moving the date back was requested by Barmore’s lawyer, and approved by a judge last week. The prosecution did not oppose the postponement.
This means that the New England Patriots’ starting defensive tackle will be able to go through his team’s full preparation for the upcoming Super
Bowl matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.
The charges Barmore is facing stem from an incident on Aug. 8. The 26-year-old and the victim, who is the mother of his child, got into an alleged fight over the air conditioning in his bedroom and also had another fight over food. According to the police report, he then grabbed her phone as she tried to leave the residence “and threw her to the floor.”
“We are confident that the evidence will demonstrate that no criminal conduct took place,” Barmore’s lawyer said in a statement at the time. “Based on the facts and the law, we expect that this personal matter will be resolved in the near future and both parties will move forward together.”
Barmore was selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft and since then has appeared in a combined 69 regular season and playoff games for the team. Last offseason, he signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension.
In a statement released by the Patriots, they said that they “were made aware at the time of the incident and informed the NFL in a timely manner” and that the team “will respect that process, continue to monitor the situation closely, as we have over the past few months, and cooperate fully with the league.”
