One of the largest remaining needs for the Michigan Wolverines this offseason is linebacker, and today that position group got a little deeper. Former BYU linebacker Max Alford, nephew of Michigan running
backs coach Tony Alford, has committed to the Wolverines through the transfer portal.
Alford’s ties to the program go beyond relational, as new defensive coordinator Jay Hill was also his coordinator in Provo. That was Alford’s one and only season with the Cougars, where he rose towards the second half of the season as a rotational piece. His first stop was at Utah State, where he started five games in three seasons there. But in each of the last two years, Alford has suffered season-ending injuries.
All in all, Alford has compiled 63 total tackles and one sack during his college career up to this point.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Alford could be a sneaky nice pick up for the Wolverines. They’ve suffered quite a few losses at linebacker with Cole Sullivan heading to Oklahoma in the transfer portal, Jimmy Rolder and Jaishawn Barham entering the NFL Draft, and Ernest Hausmann medically retiring. Jaydon Hood also entered the portal last week.
On the portal front, it puts into question the status of Cal transfer Cade Uluave who has reportedly had some troubles getting through admissions after earning a prediction from On3, which has since been flipped to BYU. All this comes after Rasheem Biles, the No. 2 ranked linebacker in the portal who also visited Ann Arbor, committed to Texas.
There’s likely still some work to do at the position before the Wolverines have completed their pursuits, so expect to hear more in the coming days.
