Manuel Neuer’s choppy form raised a desire among Bayern Munich fans for Jonas Urbig to feature in more games. The 40-year-old’s recent foot injury granted that wish, but now Urbig is in the hot seat, receiving criticism after a few mediocre performances.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer jumped to the 23-year-old shot-stopper’s defense, ensuring his status as the club’s future number one.
“Jonas Urbig joined us as a very young goalkeeper from the second division. He has since established himself as Bayern’s
future No. 1 and has already made his first international appearances,” said Hainer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The 72-year-old president went on to praise Bayern’s recruitment for identifying Urbig as an appropriate successor to Neuer.
“Finding a successor to a multiple-time world goalkeeper of the year is an enormous challenge, and it has been handled, and continues to be handled, very well. Our sporting management deserves considerable credit for this development.”
Finally, Hainer guaranteed that Urbig has the necessary skills to succeed at Die Rekordmeister.
“He has exactly the blend of qualities needed at FC Bayern: talent, personality, and the determination to keep learning every day. Jonas Urbig already exudes remarkable calmness and composure and has proven himself in big games. We all believe he has a very bright future ahead of him.”
Living up to one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time is a tall order. All things considered, Urbig is doing a fine job deputizing for Neuer, though he still has a long way to go until he reaches the sweeper-keeper’s level.
