When it comes to the Green Bay Packers and rumblings about defensive tackle, the smoke is getting harder to ignore.
As noted by Justis Mosqueda, a potential trade for Dexter Lawrence might not require as much in return as initially thought. Recent reporting suggests the price could land in the range of a second- and fifth-round pick. That’s a far more manageable price tag for a team without a first-rounder.
That alone is noteworthy, but it’s just one piece of a much larger picture.
Lawrence’s situation
with the New York Giants has escalated in recent days, with contract talks hitting an impasse and a move expected ahead of the draft. Even if the Giants are publicly hesitant to move him, the mere fact that conversations are happening (and that his market may be softer than expected) creates opportunity.
And the Packers are consistently mentioned as a logical fit. League insiders have pointed to Green Bay as a team with both the need and the resources to pursue an impact interior defender, especially after reshaping the defensive front in recent months.
Zoom out, and things become clearer.
Between reported interest in Lawrence, ongoing evaluation of defensive line prospects, and a roster that still lacks a true anchor in the middle, the Packers are actively and obviously looking to add one or more defensive tackles. Whether they do so through a trade or the draft (or a bit of both) remains to be seen, but the tea leaves are there.
Personally, I think a trade feels unlikely, but I would still bet money on having multiple new IDL names in the room come training camp.
