It’s done. After days of wheeling and dealing, and no small amount of supporter angst, Tottenham Hotspur central defender Kevin Danso has moved to Sunderland.
Danso’s move is a loan with a £2.5m loan fee and a £22.5m purchase obligation that triggers next summer. Danso’s move to the Black Cats comes after he indicated to Roberto De Zerbi that he wanted
a new challenge and desired to leave the club. He leaves a void in Spurs’ back line that will soon be filled by £7m Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, but he also leaves a hole in our hearts.
Danso was a backup defender behind Micky van de Ven and Cuti Romero, and it looked like he was set to continue as a backup defender this season behind Micky and Jan Paul van Hecke. We don’t really know what prompted Danso to want to leave, but he expressed his desire to do so and the club graciously allowed him to go.
It’s a pretty good fee for a player that we purchased for £20m a couple of seasons ago, even if the fee is delayed until next year’s books. We will miss his towering presence and aerial ability in the back line.
