Match Preview
Everton will be on the road even though it’s just the quick jaunt across town to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby in a Saturday lunchtime kickoff.
It’s been some time since the Blues have been even in the top half of the table when the two crosstown rivals play the latest edition of what is often known as the Friendly Derby, but an encouraging start to the campaign sees David Moyes side in sixth place taking on the league leaders.
The manager seemed to indicate that there were some
new knocks to be concerned about even Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitaliy Mykolenko are working their way back to full fitness. The addition of nine players in the summer transfer window has strengthened the squad but it remains pretty thin with the Toffees only naming a 23-man squad when the Premier League required 25-player lists to be submitted.
Moyes has yet to get an away win in all the Merseyside derbies he’s played in over the years, in part due to his ultraconservative approach when going across Stanley Park. Yet he’s shown a willingness to be more attacking this season given more talent in the forward positions. How will he approach the game today?
Liverpool for their part have looked stronger and yet more fallible this season. With a dearth of talent on display after a free-spending summer, Arne Slot ominously looks well set for another title challenge. They have struggled early this season but at the same time remain perfect with a win in every game they have played this season, largely due to the knack they’ve developed of finishing strong, with a goal in every one of those games after the 80th minute or so.

Last Meeting
The Blues last trip to Anfield was in April of last season, when they lost 1-0 to a hotly contested, somewhat offside goal scored by the late Diogo Jota. Moyes has already brought up that goal as he’s tried to get in the referee’s head ahead of today’s game a la Jurgen Klopp.
