What is the story about?

That was preseason alright

Random kids in the starting XI. An opponent that could be a trivia question. 1st team sale candidates warming the bench. Bayern Munich were not taking this game seriously, and it showed.

Games like these are for the most dedicated of fans. It will take time before the likes of Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich, and co. return to their club team roles. Until then, we should take what little we can get.

The kids … did not stand out

SV Wehen Wiesbaden aren’t exactly pushover chumps, but you would expect the kids to do a little

better here.

To be fair, the most of the top campus talent is injured right now, but Bayern Munich want players who can break into the first team, and none of these kids seem very close to it right now. Preseason usually brings out one or two promising youngsters — think Julian Green, Franck Evina, Nestory Irankunda, and more recently, Lennart Karl — who may or may not go on to make a splash in the coming season, but this game did not even have that.

The major exception was 19-year-old Tim Binder, whose sharp moves won a penalty in the second half. If we see more of him in preseason, maybe he could turn out to be someone special. A huge maybe. For now, he goes in the “has potential” category.

Tom Bischof belongs in the first team

He’s too good for this crowd.

The problem Bischof has is that he’s too much of an all-rounder. It makes it hard for a coach to resist using him as a gap filler. Oh, the left-back is injured? Send in Bischof, he can defend. Oh, right-back pulled his hammy? Start Bischof there, he has pace. The attack can’t make a breakthrough? Sub on Bischof, he can dribble and let it rip from outside the box.

Last season, this versatility hurt his chances of making the starting XI, but things could now change. Bischof cut an imposing figure in the second half. From a pure quality standpoint, he was several levels apart from the rest of his teammates. If Vincent Kompany can narrow down a role for him, Bayern Munich stand to benefit immensely.
