We did it! We started off the season with a win!
I’m not going to lie at the very end of that game last week, I felt like I was going to have to throw up all of the Kool-Aid that I had been chugging this offseason. Luckily, the football gods decided to pull some strings.
This week won’t be like that though. This week we won’t be at the edge of our seats. We’re going to see a good old fashioned Nebraska Non-conference Beating.
#1 EMMETT JOHNSON
The Huskers’ top running back started the season out in a big way, rushing
for 108 yards and contributing 135 yards of total offense. Many times Johnson was seen carrying a whole pile of defenders with him as he gained another few yards after contact.
Nebraska will not exclusively use Johnson like they did last week, but look for him to make some big plays against the Zips
#2 TAKEAWAYS
Last week the Huskers were +2 in the turnover department. I love when we can start the season on the positive when it comes to turnovers. There were a couple close calls, but there won’t be this week.
The Husker defense is not only going to come up with some good stops, they will also get some key takeaways.
I’m looking for a pick 6. The Blackshirts are going to score this week.
#3 AIRING IT OUT
While the ground game is sure to be effective on Saturday, I think we will see Dylan Raiola showcase some long passes this week.
I’ll be looking forward to seeing some big connections with Dane Key and Jacory Barney Jr.
#4 SPECIAL TEAMS
The kickers put on a bit of a show last week (aside from a weird out of bounds kick that took advantage of a rule that nobody knew about). Kyle Cunanan started his Husker career off with a 52 foot field goal and punter Archie Wilson showed that his big leg(s) definitely made up for his lack of football experience. These kickers will be solid and ready once again this week.
I am also expecting some big special teams plays, perhaps a kickoff or punt return or a blocked kick. With those two strong kickers the rest of the group needs to get in on the special teams magic.
#5 IMPROVED RUSHING DEFENSE
While the feeling of victory was definitely happy for all Husker fans, we all know the team had some things to work on this week. One of the biggest was the rushing defense. They allowed Cincinnati 202 yards rushing in the game.
That won’t happen this week. The tackles will be cleaner and the Zips are not going to be able to run through the Huskers.
Who’s ready for another victory? See you next week when the Huskers are 2-0!
