Canelo Alvarez suffered just his third professional defeat last night (Sat., Sept. 13, 2025) after coming up short against Terence Crawford via unanimous decision after 12 rounds of action inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada (video highlights here).
After the fight, Canelo was quick to give Crawford all of the credit in the world for a great game plan and a hard style to figure out. But the now-former champion gave “Bud” and even bigger compliment by saying that he is a far better boxer
than Floyd Mayweather Jr. was.
“I think Crawford is way better than Floyd Mayweather,” said Canelo in a short answer during the post-fight press conference.
Of course, if anyone can compare the two it’s Canelo, as he is the only man to have faced both. Alvarez’s first pro career loss came at the hands of “Money” way back in 2013 when the Mexican-born fighter was just 23 years old. Mayweather proved to be too much for Alvarez then, stifling him all night long with great defense and perfectly-picked counter shots. Crawford pretty much did the same to Alvarez last night in “Sin City,” but Canelo feels Crawford is simply a better overall boxer than the man many feel is one of the greatest to ever do it.
Crawford moved up two weight classes in his search of history, which he accomplished by claiming the Super Middleweight titles to become the only male boxer ever to become undisputed in three separate weight classes, previously doing it at Welterweight and Super Welterweight.
With a record of 42-0, 31 knockouts, Crawford proved once and for all that he belongs in the conversation when it comes to the elite of the elite, with Max Kellerman going as far as calling him the greatest of all time of this current era.
“Bud” wasn’t decisive when it came to discussing his next move inside the ring or retirement, revealing that he will take some much-needed time off before he decides. A rematch against Canelo is always on the table, or he could sign on to face Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who is undefeated at 31-0 and is the current IBF, WBA and The Ring Welterweight champion.
