Meet the Mets
In a one-for-one contract swap, the Mets are sending 10-year veteran Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Gold Glove second baseman Marcus Semien.
The Mets gave Nimmo the weekend to decide whether he wanted
to waive his no-trade clause or not and after two days of deliberations and a discussion with Jacob deGrom, he agreed.
More than anything, this is a way to move on from the disappointing core of the 2020s and open up room for pieces of the next core to close the decade.
Of course, the Brandon Nimmo move is the start of the offseason plan rather than being an isolated move.
Moving Nimmo showed that David Stearns isn’t going to be swayed by a long tenure or sentimentality, so what does that mean for Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso?
Speaking of Diaz, the Mets have reportedly met multiple times with the camps of free agent closers Devin Williams and Robert Suarez.
Around the National League East
Following his two innings to end the 2025 season with the club, the Braves are bringing reliever Joel Payamps back into the fold on a one-year deal for $2.25M.
Around Major League Baseball
The Detroit Tigers, among others, are looking at Mets Legend Ryan Helsley and see a potential starting pitcher rather than a closer.
It isn’t quite a transaction, but there are a fair few minor league teams getting new identities over the coming offseason, which is nice.
There’s a chance Cody Bellinger goes back to Los Angeles…just with the Angels instead of the Dodgers this time.
This Date in Mets History
On this date 20 years ago, the Mets traded Mike Jacobs and others for Carlos Deglado.
