49ers game review: The ‘lucky’ play that captures Fred Warner’s lofty standard (paywall)
On 3rd-and-5 from the 49ers’ 9-yard line, with the 49ers leading 6-3, Arizona running back Emari Demercado was left all alone in the right flat due to a busted assignment. Kyler Murray floated a perfect pass that clanged off Demercado’s hands, preventing a likely go-ahead touchdown and forcing the Cardinals to settle for a game-tying field goal.
Warner’s reaction? The All-Pro linebacker and six-time team captain
didn’t celebrate. Instead, he looked infuriated. He placed both hands on his helmet, the universal “what are we doing here?” sign. He still wasn’t amused when I found him alone at his locker after the 49ers’ emotional walk-off victory.
49ers minutia minute: Mykel Williams, Bryce Huff stepped up after Nick Bosa went down (paywall)
“Pearsall described his 34-yard catch on fourth-and-2 in the fourth quarter as a “yes or no play.” If the cornerback lined up on the receiver’s outside, Jones would have eliminated Pearsall from his progression and probably thrown to Bourne on the other side. The fact that the cornerback was on Pearsall’s inside made it a “yes” because Pearsall had an unobstructed path to the wide or “field” side of the formation.
“I was just trying to read it over my shoulder,” Pearsall said of the pass. “When you play day games like that, the sun gets in your eyes. I couldn’t really see the ball until it got pretty close to me.”
49ers overreactions: San Francisco’s lack of depth on display early this season
“Atrocious? Really?
The 49ers need to take the ball away. That is the area where the secondary needs to step up, for sure. Sam Darnold, Spencer Rattler and Kyler Murray combined for four touchdowns passes and no interceptions in three games.
San Francisco’s pass rush can do a much better job of putting pressure on the quarterback, but the defensive backfield generally has held up well. In three games, the opposition is averaging 172 yards passing per game. The 49ers’ pass defense ranks third, allowing just 5.6 yards per pass attempt.
That is far from atrocious.“
49ers work out Shilo Sanders, five other players; sign William Bradley-King
“Defensive back Shilo Sanders, son of Deion Sanders, visited the 49ers to participate in a tryout.
Sanders played for his dad at Colorado over his final two college seasons. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie but was cut before the start of the 2025 NFL season.
Sanders was one of six free agents to come to Santa Clara this week for tryouts, according to the league’s official personnel notice.
The 49ers held tryouts with defensive linemen William Bradley-King and Titus Leo, and linebacker Isaiah Thomas.
Bradley-King spent time with the 49ers during training camp. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the 49ers are signing Bradley-King to their practice squad.“
