The New England Patriots lost Antonio Gibson to a potentially serious knee injury against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.
The veteran running back remained on the ground after a taking a hard hit on a kickoff
return in the second quarter. He did manage to gingerly walk off the field under his own power, but after a stint in the blue medical tent quickly departed for the locker room. The team ruled him out shortly thereafter.
Gibson, 27, is in his second season with the Patriots after joining the team as a free agent in 2024. Serving as a top three member of the running back rotation alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, he had been on the field for 52 offensive snaps this season before going down and touched the ball 26 times for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Six of those carries for 21 yards came against the Bills. After Stevenson lost a fumble in the first quarter, he was inserted into the lineup as the top running back option.
In addition to his offensive duties, Gibson also works as the Patriots’ primary kickoff returner. He entered Sunday with 10 kickoffs for 293 yards — including a 90-yard touchdown in Week 3 against Miami — and added 49 yards on two more runbacks versus Buffalo.
His final play saw him advance the ball 24 yards before going down and fumbling the ball in the process. Henderson recovered for the Patriots, who ended up taking a 6-3 lead into the half.
