UNC may have gotten their coaching situation figured out earlier today but their next task begins now with the transfer portal opening tomorrow. Freshman point guard Derek Dixon will be entering his name into the portal when it opens. The freshman took control of the point guard position as the season went on after the struggles of Kyan Evans forced him to the bench.
Dixon improved noticeably as the season went on. He had some massive moments, including most notably finding Seth Trimble for the game-winner
against Duke in Chapel Hill.
Entering the transfer portal does not definitively mean that Dixon won’t return to Carolina. With a new coach coming on board, most players are likely to test the waters with so much uncertainty around Michael Malone’s vision for the team next season. It’s possible that Dixon ends up finding some guarantee elsewhere that he decides to take instead. This will probably be a common route to take for players waiting to hear what their new coach thinks of them and how they fit into his plans.
