Women’s Volleyball (11-7)
The women’s volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set match to Washington on Friday night. Gillian Grimes had 24 digs in the match for the Nittany Lions, but a slow start for the offense allowed the Huskies to build a two-set lead and force Penn State to play from behind. Penn State forced a fifth set, but the home team prevailed 15-13 in the final set.
Kennedy Martin (26 kills), Caroline Jurevicius (11), and Maggie Mendelson (12) all reached double figures in kills against Oregon, paving the
way for an offense that hit .341 for the match. Every set was decided by three points or fewer, leaving very little margin for error for the Nittany Lions, but they escaped Eugene with a 3-1 win over a solid Ducks team.
Penn State will host Rutgers on Friday (7pm on Big Ten Plus) and travel to Ohio State on Sunday (noon on Big Ten Plus).
Women’s Hockey (8-0)
The women’s hockey team continued its unbeaten start with a sweep of No. 15 Mercyhurst. Katie DeSa made 18 saves in Game 1 to record her third shutout of the season and the 16th in her Penn State career. Penn State won 3-0.
In Game 2, the offense roared to life in a 6-1 win. Grace Outwater scored two goals in the game, and Maddy Christian and Tessa Janecke each had a goal and an assist.
Penn State will continue AHA play with games against Lindenwood on Friday (2pm) and Saturday (1pm).
Women’s Soccer (8-6-3)
The women’s soccer team split its Indiana road trip with a 1-0 win over Purdue and a 2-1 loss to Indiana.
Amelia White scored the only goal for Penn State in the win over Purdue in the first half. The defense did the rest, holding the Boilermakers to just three shots on goal. Mackenzie Gress recorded a three-save shutout to preserve the win.
Julia Raich scored a goal in the 88th minute to prevent Penn State from being shut out against Indiana. The Hoosiers scored two key second-half goals to doom the Nittany Lions.
Penn State will wrap up the regular season on Sunday at home against Ohio State. The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled to begin next Thursday. Matchups will be finalized after the end of the regular season.
Men’s Soccer (5-6-3)
The men’s soccer team tied Northwestern 2-2 and lost 2-1 to Washington at home. Malick Daouda and Ben Madore rallied Penn State against Northwestern, scoring one goal each in the second half. A wild finish to regulation saw Northwestern take a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute, but Daouda tied the game with 32 seconds left to salvage a point for Penn State.
Jonathan Evans made eight saves against Washington to keep the team afloat, but the Huskies managed two goals to keep Penn State at bay. Ben Liscum scored on a penalty shot in the 76th minute to prevent a shutout, but the Lions could not find the tying goal.
Penn State will take on Wisconsin on the road on Saturday (8pm on Big Ten Plus).
Field Hockey (6-8)
The field hockey team defeated Iowa 1-0 and fell to Indiana 3-1. Olivia Marthins scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime against Iowa, the only goal of the game. Penn State won its second conference game of the season.
Indiana held Penn State to just six shots on goal and held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the final 54 minutes of the contest. Natalie Freeman put Penn State on top early in the first period, but the rest of the game was sluggish for the offense. The Hoosiers broke a halftime tie with two goals in the second half to put away Penn State.
Penn State will travel to Lock Haven on Friday (3pm) and Princeton on Sunday (noon).
