We have a new #1.
Arizona is undefeated no more, and that means Michigan has snatched the throne at 24-1. They’ve won nine Quad 1 games, pounded the majority of their competition, and seem to be showing no signs of slowing down as March nears. Behind them sits Houston, who’s only lost once in Big 12 play so far and is poised to win the league yet again.
Duke, Arizona, and UConn round out the top five. The Blue Devils and Huskies also are just one game away from being unbeaten in their respective leagues,
but North Carolina and St. John’s got the better of them to make Michigan and St. Louis the only teams in the country with one loss.
Oh, and of course, #22 Miami-OH is now the last undefeated team left in the country after Arizona’s 0-2 week. The Redhawks play at UMass Tuesday and host Bowling Green Friday in MACtion that could enable them to make history if they go the distance with this thing for the next four weeks.
Let’s take a look at the complete AP poll of Week 16:
Notes:
- An all-time scheduling stroke of genius has made ESPN at 6:30 Saturday the destination for what might be one of the greatest games of the whole year: #1 Michigan is facing #3 Duke in Washington D.C for the Edward Jones Capital Showcase. How could you ask for a greater February nonconference game than this clash between these two juggernauts!
- In league action, #4 Arizona will play at #2 Houston at 3:00 Saturday afternoon, thus meaning that the top four of the rankings will all be playing each other on the same day! What are the odds of that happening? This Saturday might go down in hoops history.
- Purdue’s been making a comeback since a losing skid to end January. The Boilermakers have won all four of their games in February, including an overtime victory at Nebraska. Now they’ll host Michigan in Mackey Arena for their biggest challenge of the season.
- Don’t sleep on Virginia. The Cavaliers have quietly amassed a 22-3 record and are fresh off a victory in a February nonconference game of their own with Ohio State in Nashville. Their clash with Duke will be on the last day of the month in Cameron.
