After reports of them looking to do so came out over the weekend, the Lakers have signed Drew Timme to a two-way deal, first reported by Shams Charania of ESPN.
To make room for Timme, the team waived Christian
Koloko.
Timme has been one of the standouts for the South Bay Lakers this season, as Charania noted. On Friday, Timme scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting with 14 rebounds in the team’s win over the Santa Cruz Warriors. The two teams met again on Sunday with Timme scoring a team-high 22 points.
Koloko was signed last season but has long felt like he was two years away from being two years away. While he showed potential at times during his season with LA, it’s come in brief flashes and never been consistent.
Last season with the Lakers, he played in 37 games and averaged 2.4 points and 2.5 rebounds. Koloko did not make an appearance for the team this season. He also played in the two G League games this weekend, his first games of the year, scoring five points in the first game and 12 points with 14 rebounds in the second game.
While Timme isn’t a like-for-like replacement as a 6’9” forward, he does offer statistical production that Koloko often struggled to achieve. It’s also easier for the Lakers to waive Koloko now that they have legitimate center depth on the roster.
Timme joins Nick Smith Jr. and Chris Mañon as the team’s two-way signings.
