This year’s Halloween marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most famous moments in modern Yankees history. Just a little while before midnight, Tino Martinez stepped up to the plate as the Bombers’ last hope of avoiding a 3-1 World Series deficit against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s easy to forget now, but Byung-Hyun Kim struck out the side in a perfect eighth even before retiring two of the first three batters in the ninth. However, Paul O’Neill singled with one down, and two batters later,
up came Tino.
Hell of a moment! Right after midnight, Derek Jeter walked it off in the 10th.
Today on the site, Michael will check in on this past week’s Arizona Fall League action from Dax Kilby and company, Jonathan will celebrate the 64th birthday of solid catcher Matt Nokes, and John will take the occasion of Halloween to remember the decisions that most haunt the Yankees in the past decade. Also, Matt will name his All-October Yankees Birthdays team.
Questions/Prompts:
1. I’m sure we’ve asked this before, but it’s that time of year again: favorite Halloween candy?
2. When candy isn’t offered: pretzels or popcorn?
