In Wednesday’s ACC Action, Notre Dame pushed Louisville but lost 76-65, Cal slipped by Georgia Tech 90-85 and Clemson stole one at Stanford, 66-64.
It was a back-and-forth game but the last few minutes were sort of a battle of futility. Ebuka Okorie hit a meaningless uncontested shot as time ran out but other than that, Clemson’s last basket was by Ace Buckner with 4:01 left and Stanford’s was by Oskar Giltay with 3:43 to go.
After that, Nick Davidson was 1-1 from the line. Okorie hit a pair, then
Davidson hit both of his. Ace Buckner hit a pair and then Okorie’s shot.
Along the way, RJ Godfrey had foul two shots, whiffed the first and airballed the second. It was one of the biggest chokes we’ve seen in a while.
It was a tense but awkward ending, but every team will have bad nights and this is a game Clemson could easily have lost. It speaks well of them that they pulled it off.
Georgia Tech pushed Cal but the Bears had a little too much and so won by 5. Cal was up by 15 though but lost it as the Yellow Jackets ripped off a 20-3 run to go up 51-49.
Tech was without Mouhamed Sylla and Peyton Marshall and then lost their other big, Baye Ndongo, to a leg injury. No word on how serious it is but that’s rough.
Tech has now lost three straight and six of seven.
Notre Dame gave Louisville a better game than we expected, but the Irish just don’t have enough to pull an upset like that. Obviously Markus Burton is still out and Louisville limited Jalen Haralson and Braeden Shrewsberry to 8 apiece. The big surprise: Cole Certa racked up 18.
Mikel Brown played poorly again, suggesting he might still be struggling with his back. He shot 1-7 for 6 points. Isaac McKneely had 13 while Ryan Conwell picked up 11. Off the bench, Khani Rooths had 12 and Kasean Pryor 10.
No games until Saturday when Duke at UNC will be the obvious highlight.
