The Cleveland Browns’ 23-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave Todd Monken his first win as an NFL head coach. While the game was far from perfect, this win was important for the overall team morale. There was also plenty to learn about Monken from a coaching standpoint following the win, including how he will navigate the media throughout the season.
Monken has a much more fiery personality than prior head coach Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski was known for his more monotone way of speaking and reserved
interactions with the media. After just two weeks, it is already clear that Monken speaks with much more emotion and is not afraid to call people out. He even referenced negative comments from former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and used his postgame media availability to clap back at them. It is clear Monken has a chip on his shoulder and is ready to come out swinging when needed.
On the field, the offense had to rely heavily on the passing game this week. After struggles in the passing game in week one, it is important to see that Monken did not panic and completely change up what he wants this team to do on offense. He continued to trust in those individuals and find opportunities to move the ball. While there were few explosive plays, the team put together enough drives to secure the win over the Buccaneers. Confidence in the offense will be important as the season continues.
