You could argue that no one had a better preseason for the Green Bay Packers than quarterback Kyle McCord, who was able to put up a 102.4 passer rating after completing 46 of 70 passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns. McCord had a fairly quick rise in Green Bay, as he was battling for the third quarterback job as recently as the preseason opener.
But now, the Packers will need to look elsewhere for a practice squad quarterback. On Sunday, Green Bay sent McCord to the Miami Dolphins, who released
every quarterback on their roster other than Malik Willis, for a 2028 sixth-round pick. The Dolphins traded their backup quarterback, Quinn Ewers, to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday for a 2028 sixth-round pick. Miami’s brass, who were signed from Green Bay this offseason, essentially swapped out Ewers for McCord.
Good luck to McCord (and Willis) with Packers South this season. It’s pretty impressive that general manager Brian Gutekunst was able to flip a reserve-futures signing in January into a draft pick in August. With that being said, McCord was the only other quarterback on the 91-man offseason roster besides starter Jordan Love and backup Tyrod Taylor, so Green Bay will need to look at an outside addition for their practice squad quarterback in 2026.
