The Dodgers began the week with a two-game lead in the National League West, and had to rally on Sunday to escape the week with a first-place tie. Inconsistent play meant a split against the lowly Rockies at Coors Field, and the offense was nearly nonexistent all weekend at Petco Park before a last-chance power drive to pull out of San Diego with a win.
Batter of the week
Freddie Freeman hit two of the Dodgers’ four home runs to salvage Sunday’s series finale against the Padres, and for the week led the team in hits,
runs, RBI, home runs, and extra-base hits.
Honorable mention goes to Alex Freeland, who went on an extra-base hit barrage, and his his two solo home runs accounted for the Dodgers’ only scoring in the first two games in San Diego. Manager Dave Roberts took time out from his exasperation at the offense on Saturday night to praise Freeland’s effort and approach in his first major league stint: “We got a kid who comes up — he’s responsible for our two runs in this series — and this is just fight and hunger from a young kid who is trying to stick.”
Pitcher of the week
Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched well enough to win both of his starts, striking out 12 in his 13 innings and delivered quality starts in both efforts. Though he nearly came away empty-handed, Yamamoto earned the win on Sunday thanks to the Dodgers’ rally in the top of the seventh inning.

Miscellany
Power & speed: Andy Pages homered in Thursday’s series finale at Coors Field, which was his 21st home run of the season but first on the road since April 23 at Wrigley Field. That broke a team-record streak of 16 consecutive home runs at Dodger Stadium. Pages also stole a base on Thursday, his second game with both a home run and steal this season, along with April 29 against the Marlins. The Dodgers have six homer/steal games this season, with three by Shohei Ohtani and once by Max Muncy along with the two by Pages.
Divisional woes: Prior to this week, the Dodgers won eight of their nine series against NL West teams and split the other series. But on this road trip through Denver and San Diego the Dodgers won zero series against divisional opponents, following a lackluster split at Coors Field with dropping two of three games at Petco Park, the Dodgers’ first divisional series loss of the season.
Call for the long ball: Alex Call had a strong week with seven hits in 14 at-bats, and on Tuesday in Denver hit his first home run with the Dodgers. The 453-foot blast was the team’s longest home run of the season, a fact that surprised even Call himself.
Transactions
Wednesday: Paul Gervase was called up from Triple-A to make his Dodgers debut, the 39th pitcher used by the team this season. Alexis Díaz was optioned to Oklahoma City.
Thursday: Matt Sauer was called up from Triple-A to provide length in the bullpen, and Gervase was optioned.
Friday: Tanner Scott was activated off the injured list after missing a month with left elbow inflammation, and Sauer was optioned.
Saturday: Kirby Yates was activated after missing just over three weeks with lower back tightness, and Blake Snell was placed on the paternity list.

Up next
With no more games against the Padres until possibly October, the Dodgers are back home to run the Kelly Stinnet gauntlet by hosting the Reds and Diamondbacks to finish out August. An earlier start time on getaway day for the Reds is two minutes shy of the latest-possible start, as mandated by the collective bargaining agreement.
