Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild is starting to take shape after Sandro Tonali’s major £100 million departure to Tottenham, but replacing the Italy international could be equally costly.
Sky Sports first reported Newcastle’s interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha. This is not the first time the player has been linked with Newcastle, as Eddie Howe considered him in 2023 before the club chose to sign Tonali from AC Milan instead.
Now, in a new report by The Mirror, Newcastle seemingly
has held conversations over Nmecha, who is also a target for Manchester United. However, the price for his acquisition might be gaudy.
“The Bundesliga side has slapped an asking price in excess of £100m on their player,” the report indicates, which translates to roughly €117 million as the Germany international’s price tag.
Newcastle has an obvious need to reshape Eddie Howe’s squad following Tonali’s move to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Barcelona, both of whom opened two glaring holes in next season’s XI.
The 25-year-old also has an admirer at Manchester United in director of football Jason Wilcox, who worked at Manchester City’s academy during Nmecha’s spell at the club.
The price tag would make a deal difficult for Manchester, too, but mostly for Newcastle, even though the club should have increased spending power after banking major fees for Tonali and Gordon. That said, NUFC has been blasted with a UEFA fine, and it’s not like they can operate as they please, no matter the depth of their pockets.
The Mirror also poured cold water on another of the Magpies’ targets in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, reporting that the move for the Senegal international now appears unlikely.
Now, with Tonali gone and Bruno Guimaraes still drawing Arsenal interest, Newcastle certainly needs another major midfield move. For now, although Nmecha looks like a serious target, the massive price attached could be too much for NUFC to overcome.
