The latest Duke Chronicle Player Preview is of Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski.
At 6-10 and 240, Scharnowski probably is more powerful than anyone else on the team, with the possible exception of Pat Ngongba. Our money is on Scharnowski, though. In some of the preseason video, he was clearly dominant at times. From the Chronicle:
“As a sophomore, he played in 25 games, setting his career-high [of] 20
points in a matchup against Murray State. Then, in his junior year he took charge with a strong shooting percentage of 68.1% from the field along with four double-doubles and a near triple-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in another contest against Murray State. Even with these impressive numbers, Scharnowski will need to adjust to the competitive, fast-paced nature of the ACC if he hopes to make a substantial impact on the floor for head coach Jon Scheyer’s squad.”
That’s all true, but we think his defensive talents will earn him minutes, although perhaps not at the end, because his free throw shooting is a problem. In 2024-25, he hit 57.4%; last year, he hit just 43.6%.
Still, his power and his defense will likely get him minutes.
