Three matchdays into the UEFA Nations League campaign, Group A2 has tightened considerably — and Germany has finally gotten off the schneid.
Greece remains at the top of the table with seven points from three matches, following a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Greece opened the campaign with strong victories over Serbia and Germany, but the dropped points against the Dutch prevented them from creating an even larger cushion.
The Netherlands sits second with five points, having collected a win over
Serbia and draws against both Germany and Greece. Their unbeaten start leaves them within striking distance of first place, with three matchdays still remaining.
Germany has moved into third place with four points, thanks to its first victory of the competition. Jürgen Klopp’s team defeated Serbia 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, with Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz providing the goals. The victory was particularly important after Germany opened the campaign with a draw against the Netherlands before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Greece.
That win also completely changed Germany’s goal differential. After entering Matchday 3 at -1, Germany now sits at +1, putting the team just one point behind the Netherlands and three behind Greece.
Serbia remains at the bottom with zero points from three matches. The Serbians have now lost all three group games, including two consecutive 2-1 defeats before Thursday’s loss to Germany.
With Germany now only one point behind the Netherlands, the group remains very much alive heading into Matchday 4.
Stay tuned for what could be a fun final matchday of competition for this international break.
