In spring football news, all eyes remain on the quarterbacks.
All indications are this battle remains close so far, which isn’t all that surprising considering it’s still pre A-Day. Alabama likely won’t decide on a starter until August.
But could Austin Mack or Keelon Russell stand out in a clear way in this second scrimmage? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s worth monitoring nonetheless.
This scrimmage won’t decide the winner of the competition, but it could be a valuable data point as the coaching staff moves forward. Maybe one of the two will use this scrimmage as an opportunity to start to separate.
Colin Gay notes that this is an interesting roster: it’s young, but experienced.
Experience matters to Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. He doesn’t deny that. But there’s something different from the younger players who have joined the Crimson Tide. There’s a level of “commitment and urgency,” a “type of unity” that makes young players veterans quickly.
“There’s nobody trying to budge in line, so to speak,” Grubb said. “They’re all trying to own that. And I think that that part, you just got to build on that. You got to let that catch fire. And, you know, let these guys, their youth and energy and how they want to play, their physical style, is something that you got to build off of.”
It’s why a player like Ryan Coleman-Williams, a 19-year-old junior, is the elder statesman, one who learned behind players like Germie Bernard and one who is ready to set the example himself.nd only Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
Greg Byrne wonders if teams that brazenly violate the terms of the House settlement could be banned from a conference.
“If they’re arbitrated … and the ruling is in favor, to where those deals being declined stand, that they can’t go forward, I think we’re going to have a question of, if schools go ahead and pay anyways, even though the house settlement has said that you have rules, then I think that’s going to get put back on conferences,” Byrne said. “About whether that’s allowed. We all agreed to the house settlement and it’s going be really important.
”… We’re going to see, I think, a potential crossroads, on whether schools should be allowed to participate in conferences if they are choosing to not follow the rules.”
Seems unlikely.
Paul Finebaum said on his show that Lane Kiffin badly wanted the Alabama job when Saban retired.
During his show, host Paul Finebaum provided a disclosure about what happened with the Alabama coaching search in 2023 when Nick Saban retired. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was immediately connected to the Crimson Tide, but he didn’t want the job.
Kiffin did.
Finebaum said it was an “absolute fact” that Kiffin was working the phone to get himself in the door at Alabama.
“He would have crawled to Tuscaloosa, but Greg Byrne and others — I’m guessing Sabin was probably behind this as well. I guarantee that Nick Saban did not encourage Greg Byrne to hire Lane Kiffin at Alabama,” Finebaum said, via a transcription from On3.
Kiffin abandoned his playoff-bound team to take the LSU job expressly because LSU intended to cheat by brokering “NIL” deals that are effectively pay-for-play through MMR partner Playfly. And yes, that is still cheating under the current rules regardless of the NCAA’s ability to enforce.
Last, Aden (Ayden?) Holloway will soon be getting his day in court.
Alabama basketball guard Aden Holloway has been indicted on both drug charges he faces, per court documents obtained Thursday by AL.com.
His preliminary hearing in district court scheduled for April 14 has been canceled. With the indictment, the case will now move to circuit court.
An indictment is essentially a formal notice of the charges. Grand jurors vote to indict if they determine there is probable cause to believe a crime was committed.
Jason Neff, Holloway’s attorney, told AL.com they were aware the district attorney was presenting the case last week.
“We are glad this can move forward so we can get this matter headed towards a resolution,” Neff said.
That’s about it for today. Have a great weekend.
Roll Tide.
