The 2027 NFL Draft feels like forever away, and we’re all caught up in the start of the NFL season. Regardless, it’s never too early to look ahead to the Draft. This weekly series will take a closer look at some of the prospects the Carolina Panthers could select in the 2027 iteration of the Draft. In this series, we’ll only be looking at prospects the Panthers could seriously consider. This week our profile will focus on Georgia Bulldogs safety KJ Bolden.
Bio
Bolden (6’0”, 185 lbs.) was a consensus five-star
recruit out of Buford, GA and the top ranked safety coming out of high school. He played both sides of the ball for his high school football team and was an anchor on the track team. Bolden had originally committed to Florida State, but he decided to switch to his hometown Bulldogs late in the process. True freshman don’t normally see the field much at programs like Georgia, but Bolden was an exception. He played in all 14 games his true freshman season, even finishing fifth on the team in tackles. He added a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception, helping him earn an SEC All-Freshman nod. After starter Malachi Starks left for the NFL last year, Bolden stepped up in his place. He finished second on the team in tackles as the full time starter with 76 stops, also tallying two interceptions, five passes defended, a fumble recovery, and a blocked punt. His performance earned him Second Team All-SEC honors and a spot on many of the defender award watch lists for this season. A couple games into this season, Bolden has three tackles and 1.5 for loss in two blowout wins against cupcake opponents where he was taken out early in the game to let the backups get some experience.
Strengths/Weaknesses
Bolden’s athleticism jumps off the tape as he boasts legitimate 4.33 speed. He uses that athleticism to full effect both in the box and in single-high situations, breaking on passes and filling in run gaps as good or better than any other safety in college football. He is a competent and willing tackler, only tagged with four missed tackles last season on about 80 chances. Bolden does an excellent job of keeping his eyes on the quarterback, reading and planting to jump routes and contest catches. He also has positional versatility as a box safety, a deep safety, and even a slot defender.
Bolden’s slight frame at just 185 lbs. is the most concerning flaw in his game. Bigger bodied backs and receivers can really test his strength because of his lass of mass. Along those lines, he struggles at times against NFL caliber tight ends in man coverage. Those guys are typically larger and heavier, bullying him a bit in coverage. Many scouts would also like to see more takeaways this year from Bolden: he has the range and ability to take the football away, just needs to do it more consistently.
Projection
Bolden’s combination of speed, tackling, and versatility make him a likely first round selection. He should be able to put some mass on his frame at the next level, so even if he doesn’t ever become an Ed Reed type of playmaker on the backend he’ll have a spot in the NFL. After the Panthers defense allowed 59 points and over 250 rushing yards against the Bears, having a sure tackling center fielder would help out a lot. Regardless of whether Ejiro Evero’s scheme is still in Carolina next year or not, Bolden’s versatility allows him to still be on the Panthers radar come April.
