Mizzou volleyball enters its first SEC road weekend with an opportunity to establish momentum that could carry throughout the conference season. After opening league play with a 3-1 victory over Vanderbilt, the Tigers will travel to Ole Miss on Friday before heading to Baton Rouge to face LSU on Sunday. Two road wins would move Mizzou to 3-0 in SEC play and give the Tigers an early foundation in a 15-match conference schedule.
The challenge is less about finding another gear and more about maintaining
the identity Mizzou has built through the first 12 matches.
The Tigers are hitting .269 as a team compared with opponents at .225, while averaging 2.37 blocks per set to opponents’ 1.62. Mizzou has also produced 12.73 digs per set, giving it the statistical profile to win matches through both sides of the net.
Ainoah Cruz has been at the center of that defensive consistency.
The senior libero leads the Tigers with 212 digs and averages 4.71 digs per set, while posting a .975 reception percentage. Against Vanderbilt, Cruz added 19 digs as Mizzou closed its first SEC match in four sets after dropping the second set. Her ability to stabilize serve receive and extend rallies will become even more important away from Hearnes Center.
On the offensive side, Paige Felder remains one of Mizzou’s most important weapons. Felder leads the Tigers with 107 kills and averages 2.68 kills per set. Behind her, Ceylin Kuyan and Kimani Johnson are both averaging more than two kills per set, while Lauren Larkin is hitting .402, the best mark among Mizzou’s primary attackers. Eva Smith has also provided a presence at the net with a team high 48 total blocks.
The Tigers will need that balance against an Ole Miss team that enters the matchup 7-5 overall and 1-0 in SEC play. Mizzou has won 20 of the 32 meetings between the programs, but the Rebels won the most recent matchup, a 3-2 decision in last season’s SEC Tournament.
Then comes LSU, which was picked eighth in the SEC preseason coaches’ poll and features three-time All-SEC selection Jurnee Robinson. Robinson was named to the 2026 Preseason All-SEC Team after earning All-American honorable mention recognition last season.
For Mizzou, the weekend comes down to execution.
The Tigers cannot afford stretches of missed serves, inconsistent passing or offensive lulls to follow them from one road gym to the next. Starting 3-0 in the SEC would require Mizzou to take the same defensive discipline, blocking strength and offensive efficiency it has shown early and sustain it for six-plus sets of road volleyball.
The Tigers already showed against Vanderbilt that they can respond when a match gets tight. Now, with two road opportunities in four days, they have a chance to show they can do it away from home, too.
First Serve will return next Monday to recap what happened in Oxford and Baton Rouge. The Fifth Set will return next Friday previewing Mizzou vs Florida.
