Mikaela Mayer is now a three-division world champion, taking a trio of super welterweight titles with a one-sided win over Mary Spencer in Montreal.
Mayer (22-2, 5 KO) captured the WBA title from Spencer, and also won the vacant WBC and WBO titles, which were recently won and given up by the retiring Cecilia Braekhus. Judges saw the fight 98-92, 98-92, and 100-90 for Mayer. Bad Left Hook unofficially scored a shutout, 100-90 for Mayer.
Mayer, 35, also still holds the WBO welterweight title, and says
she’s not sure what weight we’ll see her fight at next, but that she’s open to both 147 and 154.
“I think the most important thing is I have options, and that’s great in boxing,” she said. “I have to go back and look it over with my team. I’d love to do both, I’d love to defend (at 147 and 154). I think I’m a natural 147 lber.”
Mayer gave respect to Spencer, too, saying that she was “a heavy-handed girl,” and that 154 was “definitely different.”
The 40-year-old Spencer (10-3, 6 KO) was a terrific amateur and still has skills, plus she had a rare height advantage over the 5’9” Mayer, who used to boil down to 130 lbs, the division where she first won world title gold as a professional. But Mayer just had a clear advantage in tactics and execution, and Spencer and her team simply looked a little lost trying to figure out the fight once “being bigger” didn’t pay off, and it was clear that wasn’t really going to work pretty quickly.
Spencer is now 3-3 in her last six fights, while Mayer is back on a three-fight win streak following a very controversial loss to Natasha Jonas in 2024.
The biggest fight at 147 or 154 for Mayer remains a potential undisputed welterweight clash with Lauren Price. At 154, the only title she doesn’t have now is the IBF belt, which is held by fellow American Oshae Jones.
