The Tennessee Volunteers dropped a tough game to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night 33-27, one that perhaps they should have won had it not been for their own mistakes and self-inflicted wounds.
But
that web is now spun, and at 6-3, the Vols fell significantly in both the AP and Coaches Polls this week. Tennessee dropped 8 spots to #22 in the Coaches Poll and 9 spots to #23 in the AP Poll.
Honestly, it’s pretty notable that Tennessee still is ranked in either poll, as they’re the only team in both polls that has three losses.
For those looking for a silver lining and doing silly charts as to how Tennessee could possibly weave their way back into the fringes of the College Football Playoff picture, well, dare to dream, I guess. I won’t be joining you, but it appears some still believe in the Vols enough to have them still as a ranked team.
The initial College Football Playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday night, and we’ll see what the selection committee thinks of the Vols at that point, as that’s what really matters. But if Tennessee can find a way to take care of business at Florida (a very big and unlikely if, in my humble opinion) and Vanderbilt comes in a 9-2? I think it’s still very likely a no for a 9-3 Tennessee team, but again, for those who are cockeyed optimists, don’t write off those slim hopes just yet, I guess.
