Newcastle United’s summer rebuild is far from complete despite several new arrivals, most of them young and developmental, with the club still facing major decisions as it prepares for the start of the Premier League season.
The Magpies have already begun reinvesting the €188 million raised from the sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, spending €135 million on Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Aladji Bamba, but more experienced additions will be needed before the transfer window closes
if Newcastle wants to put together a good-enough team to compete for European football next campaign.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes Newcastle’s activity is about to increase significantly now that the World Cup has concluded and we’re under a month from the start of the new Premier League season.
“Newcastle have got some serious issues right now. They’ve got to bring in some marquee players. They know it,” Wyness told Football Insider. “They’ve lost some of their talisman, and this is really another difficult window for Newcastle.”
With Newcastle’s additions through the end of July being younger talents poised to break out later in their careers rather than established first-team replacements, Wyness expects the busiest period of Newcastle’s transfer window to begin immediately and be geared toward legit first-XI players, even if supporters do not see instant announcements.
“Now the World Cup’s finished though, I do expect their window to heat up considerably,” Wyness said. “I think this week could be one of the busiest weeks of the transfer window. Maybe not in actual announcements but in terms of the work being done behind the scenes because that’s how it works.
“It’ll take a lot of work before an announcement actually happens, but I do expect a lot to have happened over the weekend and this week as well with the World Cup now completed.”
With Tonali and Gordon out, and Bruno Guimaraes’ future still unresolved and looming as another potential high-profile exit, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle is expected to remain one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs during the final weeks of the summer transfer window if they want to build a squad capable of returning to Europe in a season.
