Newcastle United’s difficult stretch keeps going, and it’s already increasing the scrutiny and the heat on Matthias Jaissle’s seat, with three defeats in four matches and growing frustration within the fanbase over the team’s struggles in all areas of play.
However, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported on Tuesday that there is no indication Jaissle’s position is under threat, although Newcastle’s hierarchy is studying what has gone wrong in order to help fixing it.
“I’m yet to sense panic emerging from
inside Newcastle,” Waugh wrote. “That does not mean the hierarchy is blind to the clear shortcomings. Internal questions are being asked.”
According to Waugh, Newcastle has maintained internally that it expected a difficult transitional season after losing several major players, while Jaissle has been in charge for less than three months. The club also paid €10 million (£8.4 million) to bring him from Al Ahli and has publicly backed his credentials and long-term potential, which makes sense given the money they spent to snatch him from Saudi Arabia.
Waugh nevertheless stressed that the head coach won’t get unlimited patience from the board. Newcastle’s lack of an offensive structure and the steady defensive vulnerabilities remain great concerns, with Jaissle needing to demonstrate progress if he wants to keep his position.
“For now, there is no indication Jaissle’s job is under threat — and nor should there be, given the period of transition,” Waugh wrote. “But results ultimately dictate a head coach’s fate and he definitely needs some positive results and performances to provide affirmation of the faith that has been shown in him.”
The message, then, is not one of immediate danger, but neither is it one of unconditional support for the gaffer. Newcastle is simply giving Jaissle time while expecting evidence that the team is moving in the right direction, with a fall into a relegation battle the possible deciding factor on whether or not the manager is sacked.
