Kam Williams was the talk of the town in the summer, with some even floating first-round NBA buzz. He came from Tulane, where he averaged 9 points on 48% shooting, 41% from 3, and 4.5 rebounds in 32 minutes.
His numbers were expected to explode in Mark Pope’s modern offense, which, to be fair, hasn’t looked all that good this year either.
The exact opposite has happened, though, with Kam.
His shot is just not falling, and he hasn’t made much of an impact, YET.
- Blue-White Game: 0-1 from the floor (0-0 from 3)
- Win vs. Purdue: 2-6 from the floor (and 3-pt land), 6 points, 2 rebounds
- Loss vs. Georgetown: 0-5 from the floor (and 3-pt land), 0 points, 2 rebounds
- Win vs. Nicholls State: 1-3 from the field (0-2 from 3), 2 points, 2 rebounds
That is some ugly stats, and honestly, if that level of production continues, he’s almost unplayable, given how deep this team is.
However, Williams has all the tools to break out at any moment and can take off just like he did over the summer in practice. Mark Pope, for one, hasn’t lost faith, and neither should you
Kam Williams is ‘trying to figure it out’
When asked about the slow start, Pope chalked it up to the normal adjustment process.
“I don’t know if it’s playing at this level,” Pope explained. “It’s just, our guys are figuring each other out. And that’s going to be—I mean, that’s every team in the country. It just is what it is. There’s just a process of trying to figure out…how you fit and what works.”
Pope was clear that the talent is still there, and the staff isn’t wavering.
“Kam has got such a massive upside. He’s going to be a terrific player.”
So hang in there BBN, he will find his way soon. Once he gets acclimated and the game slows down for him, right now, everything is moving a little too fast.
Will he be a 20-point-per-game star? Probably not. But he will be much better than what he has been, and he will be a key contributor if this team is going to get number 9.
