With just how good Bayern Munich have been so far this season, the 2-2 draw with Mainz at the Allianz Arena felt a whole lot more like a loss. Next to Bayern’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League and 2-2 draw at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, the shock draw with a struggling Mainz side was only the third time this season Vincent Kompany’s side have dropped points across all competitions. All things considered, things have gone pretty damn well for the German Rekordmeister, especially considering
how they’ve been without Jamal Musiala all season and both Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito only just made their own returns from injury.
Bayern are on top of the Bundesliga table with a nine-point cushion over second-placed RB Leipzig, on to the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal, and in second place in the Champions League standings with only two League Phase matches left to play next year. Harry Kane is scoring at will, Luis Diaz has shown absolutely no signs of struggling to adapt to life at Bayern and in the Bundesliga, Michael Olise is on fire, Serge Gnabry is having a bit of renaissance, and Bayern’s back line has looked solid and stable aside from the amount of set piece goals they have been conceding as of late. All in all, it’s gone quit well for Kompany and company (pun intended).
Reflecting on the recent draw with Mainz on the last home match of 2025, board member for sport Max Eberl put the entirety of this season thus far into perspective, knowing that the isolated Mainz result felt worse than it actually was with how good the reining Bundesliga champions have been so far.
“If someone had told me before the season that we would be 9 points ahead of our first competitor after the 14th matchday, we would all have said: fantastic,” Eberl rationalized (via @iMiaSanMia). At this point last season, Bayern were topping the Bundesliga, but only had reached thirty-three points as opposed to the thirty-eight they currently have and were only four points clear of Bayer Leverkusen at the time. There’s still a lot of football left to be played and the new year will bring an added boost of having Musiala back in the squad, which will certainly help Bayern’s attack become even more of a force to be reckoned with.
