Harry Kane enjoyed a career-defining moment after winning the 70th annual Ballon d’Or, cementing his legacy amongst the greatest strikers of all time. But as the age-old saying goes: heavy is the head that wears the crown. Since the England captain’s triumph, the goals have dried up.
Three matches and counting—that’s how many games Kane has gone without registering a goal. A far cry from a crisis, but out of character for the talisman nonetheless. It’s not all doom and gloom, though.
Where Bayern’s
attacking spearhead failed to score, he compensated with assists. Kane registered four assists in his last three fixtures: one in Bayern’s Klassiker stalemate, one against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, and another in a tricky match-up versus Mainz 05.
While the 33-year-old striker is missing goals, he is still playing well—an observation not lost on Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl following his side’s 2-1 Bundesliga victory against the Karnevalsverein.
“But he has provided two assists today, so we’ll have to give him at least that credit in terms of goal contributions,” explained Eberl in a post-match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’re all human, after all. He’s won the Ballon d’Or and the Golden Boot, extended his contract, and received one award after another and attended one ceremony after another. All of that has an impact on you. Now he’s going to England, where he’ll probably be celebrated again as he’s set to become England’s record appearance-maker. After that, I think Harry himself will be very happy when things are only about football again. He’s usually frustrated that he isn’t scoring the goals himself. But as long as he’s setting them up, that’s the most important thing.”
Joshua Kimmich joined Max Eberl, offering his own words of encouragement for the Englishman.
“He’ll soon start scoring again, and then hopefully we’ll play even better. He has provided a few assists since then. Harry is extremely important to us, regardless of his goals. It’s also about how he conducts himself within the group and how he leads by example on the pitch. That’s why he’s valuable not only when he scores, but in so many other ways as well,” said Kimmich.
The Three Lions captain positioned himself masterfully in his last three outings, but the end product was simply missing. He is doing everything he should to score. Therefore, Harry Kane getting back on the goal sheet is a matter of when, not if.
